How often you wash your hair has a big influence on its overall health, growth, and vitality. Believe it or not, washing your hair daily can actually be very damaging to your strands, stripping away many of its natural oils and nutrients –making it prone to breakage, lack luster, and poor strength. Since you should really be washing your hair every few days (maximum), there is the challenge of making your hair appear fresh without actually reaching for that shampoo bottle. For many, this is a crucial issue since the roots of your hair may tend to get greasy real fast.

There are some great tips on how to keep your hair healthy by refraining from over-washing, while also making it appear fresh. Here’s a few important things to remember for shampoo-free hair care:

Dry Shampoo

  • This one is a no-brainer and has really taken the beauty community by storm. Why? Because it works like a dream. You spray it onto your roots and it’s really an instant refresher, soaking up any additional oils and grime. It’s also commonly used for styling since it adds the perfect amount of grip and texture to shape your locks as well as volume, without leaving any added residue or build-up.

Train your Scalp

  • You’ll be happy to know that you can actually train your scalp to produce less oils over time. If you were one of those “chronic shampooers", the detergent in the shampoo is stripping the oil from your scalp and actually creating a feedback mechanism, telling your body to produce more oil. This becomes a cycle making daily hair-washing essential because you’re scalp has gone on oil-overdrive. However, the more time you leave between washes, the less oil will be produced overtime and the easier it will get to take time between washes.

Use Baking Soda

  • Baking soda is wonderful to sprinkle onto your scalp since it is a very gentle, weak alkaline that helps to clarify hair from chemical build-up. You can also mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 cup of water and use this mixture on your scalp in place of shampoo in between washes to help lengthen your no-shampoo time.
